New York Interior Design: House Tour

Welcome to Homey Home Design! For those of you who are new here I wanted to share a bit of my story and my home with you! I named my blog 'Homey Home' because that's what our kids call our house.
My blog is a jumble of decorating, design ideas, craft projects and a little bit of life!

I've been sitting on this home tour for a while. I originally put this together for Aimee at her blog Its Overflowing when she asked if I would be apart of her Dreamy Dwellings feature! In case you missed it there, I thought I'd show you here. And lets be real, I didn't really have a post for today so this will work! ;)

Most of you have seen my whole house and may be a bit sick of it! I'm sharing it today in hopes of inspiring you to make your own spaces a little homier! Our homes are the shells of our lives and they need to be a place of safety and security for our families.

Here's our home story:

Our home started out as a basic builder grade home with carpeting and oak trim everywhere. We added in the hardwood laminate flooring and have gradually updated each space making it our own.

When we bought our house, 12 years ago, we were on year number 5 of 7 years of infertility. We had no children and didn't know if God would ever bless us with any. We chose the best house for us thinking that if we were ever blessed with kids we would eventually need to move. Our home had 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Its a tri-level plus a basement with a total of 1600 sq feet. Over the years we miscarried quintuplets and had 4 children, and we still live in our small home. We are in love with our neighborhood and that love plus a housing market that bottomed out helped us decide to make the best of what we have.

We started by adding a third bedroom on the lower level and finishing off the family room and bathroom down there. This worked for a while but eventually we had to give up our family room and create a fourth bedroom in this space. This gives our three boys their own level. We still haven't finished the basement but one day I'm hoping for a finished family room and perhaps even a craft space!

We don't have a formal dining room, just a 'dining area'. We made the most of this space by having benches build {by my dad!} to create banquette seating. This allowed us to tuck our table into the corner and give is more pass through space. Painting this square on the wall helped to define this space in an open layout.

All the oak cabinetry was painted a fresh coat of white.

Our bedroom:

McKinley's headboard was a budget friendly design. It was painted on!

Our kitchen redo is my favorite by far! It is amazing how much of a difference a can of paint can make. Check out the before's here.

This is Camden's room. My husband used a projector to paint the outline of the plane on his wall {you know, one of those dinosaurs we had in our school classrooms when we were kids!} :)

Braden and Hudson share this space. This is what used to be our family room, but it also makes a great bedroom space. We used the curtains from IKEA to create a closet space that they call their "workshop".
